Hubby and I have a theory
Don't worry it's only ours and probably not shared by the rest of the population, but please feel free to share your thoughts.
Fireworks nowadays seem to start at Halloween and carry on unabated until New Years Day.
Don't get me wrong. I love fireworks. They are pretty and visable in the night sky, which is usually when I am walking dawg (he doesn't flinch, should have been a gun dog probably)
Just wondered if you have the same thing in your neighbourhood?????????

Over in the USA, it used to be just the first week of July (our independence day celebrations on 4th July)...now, some towns have fireworks all summer long, over here, sometimes even into early autumn. Must be the darn things are getting cheaper?

Oh, home fireworks are totally illegal in New York state (other states do allow them though, which is how small store owners and householders get them, they transport them illegially over state lines).
A homeowner can technically be ticketed or arrested, and fined, for having even so much as a sparkler or some firecrackers.
Still, it's rare for that to happen. Someone really has to be annoying people, for the police to take notice. Mostly they just turn a blind eye.

Quite an anomaly then. The ownership of firearms is legal, but fireworks are banned?
Is there some rationale behind this contradiction?

Having lived in three cities where Diwali is celebrated by a significant proportion of the population, that's my guess, too. From mid-October on is now normal in those places...
As long as supermarkets and newsagents sell fireworks at cheap prices from October onwards, every Tom, Dick & Harry will be letting them off for no real reason. I remember how annoying it was when we were living in the UK and the kids were babies, trying to get them to sleep with all that noise going on was impossible some nights!
Around here you very rarely hear fireworks, it's only on the big national holidays and then they do organised events.

Well, happily in Germany private fireworks are strictly forbidden. You have to get an official allowance, perhaps to be a VIP. And they controle it strictly, as everything normally is done here. The more, fireworks are to be sold for public only after xmas until 31 of december. In a country which is so populated on a restricted area, it seems to be very reasonable.
I don't miss them in fact - to loud, as confirmed by our dog

I hate fireworks, they scare me witless. And yeah, they seem to go on forever. Personally I would only allow them at organised, marshalled events. I think that the fire and ambulance services would probably like that too...

Someone who lives across the way had a bonfire party last night. They were still out with a roaring fire and fireworks going off at 1.00am. They're a weird lot round here, they let fireworks off anytime of the year, quite often in summer. Our dogs have a miserable time, they sit and shake with their legs crossed refusing to go out.
fireworks seem to be used for all occasions nowadays. Back when I lived in Brum Diwali was celebrated with fireworks but they only went off over 1 or 2 nights, usualy near to Guy Fawkes Night,
In Brighton there is a fireworks display of the pier every Satruday through the summer - that was great for tourists? but really annoying living locally - first you got the noise and the fireworks were on til 10pm so a pain if you were watching tv, but then it'd wake the seagulls and they'd squawk for another hour or two after they're woken.
Fireworks should be on the 5th November and Diwali Day unless at an organised (by officials) fireworks display!

I'll say one word...Divali! This is why the fireworks go on and on and on. Fireworks are part of the Divali celebrations and they are all to do with the celebration of the festival of light.
